Circular Thinking
2021, TC-2 Jacquard Woven
Warp: Tencel
Weft: 20/2 cotton (black), elastic silk, wool crepe (s twist), pink and cream wool, horsehair
This project explores the potential for foldable fabrics to be utilized as a form of reusable packaging. The fold pattern is Jun Mitani’s circle with 16 folds. The way that the fabric opens and closes is very similar to a candy wrapper, except with a more controlled collapse.
The intention of the project was for the circle to close up fully, but after the fabric had been finished, the striking look of it laid open was almost more satisfying than seeing it fully closed.
Seeing as the sphere will be stable in it’s closed state and it’s open state, it opens up many possibilities in terms of reusable packaging which can be repurposed in an artful way once it’s original use has been fulfilled.
